Memory cards are non-volatile storage medium based on flash technology. Commonly used in electronic gadgets like mobile phones, digital cameras, card navigation system, PDAs, gaming consoles, mp3 players, etc. They are compact in size with good data retaining capability without using external power supply. They are primarily used for storing data like audio tracks, video clips and photos. There are several memory cards available like MMC (Multi Media Card), XD (Extreme Digital) picture card, CF (Compact Flash) card, SD (Secure Digital) card, Smart media card, Memory stick, Mini SD card, Micro SD card etc. All memory cards make use of NAND flash technology, which is a solid-state storage device. As memory cards are solid-state storage devices, they are not liable to suffer from mechanical failures, as there are no moving parts unlike hard drive. However, there are chances of logical failures, which result in data loss.
Digital cameras make use of memory cards to extend the memory of the device and to store pictures. Before using the memory card, you need to format it. Formatting a memory card is similar to formatting a hard drive, which sets up the file system to organize and manage the data on SD cards. Memory card supports two types of file formats i.e., FAT and NTFS. You have to format memory card, when you are facing problems with your memory card. Formatting process deletes the complete data present in memory card and recreates the file system to arrange the data that can be stored further. Some of the electronic devices do not support FAT32 file format. Therefore, while formatting memory card by using FAT32 make sure that your device, which uses memory card, supports FAT32 file system. Sometimes you might have come across any format card error due to corruption of file system. In this case, to recover digital pictures after format error you need to utilize reliable digital photo recovery software.
After clicking pictures from your digital camera, you connect the camera to your computer for transferring photos. If you come across any of the errors like “memory card cannot be formatted”, “Seek errors” or “memory card unreadable” etc. These errors are mainly caused because of corruption in boot sector of the memory card, which is responsible for setting up the geometry of the card. If you store huge amount of data directly in root directory then that might also result in loss of data. Root directory is a structure, which allows you to store only limited number of files i.e. approximately 256 files. If you have stored large files with unknown or weird file names then the root directory will point to some other or faulty location, which might result in loss of data. If the memory card is used in different electronic devices then also the file structure of the card gets damaged and result in inaccessibility and huge loss of data.
To overwhelm loss from memory cards you can take few precautions:
If you lose pictures from your memory card even after taking precautions then you should opt for an efficient and reliable software that can recover data from damaged or corrupted memory card. Memory card recovery software is most recommendable as it recovers all the accidentally deleted and lost or corrupted data with ease. It supports file recovery from USB drive along with different types of memory card, hard drives, FireWire drives, iPods, etc. Know more about the process of recovery from USB drives. It recovers all types of media files with ease. With the help of this software you are able to recover RAW images from professional camcoders. It recovers data from formatted and re-formatted memory cards. It is read-only software i.e., it will not overwrite any new data, which results in permanent data loss. Besides RAW images the software can also recover lost PNG images from flash memory card and also restore images of other formats like JPEG, GIF, TIFF etc. Visit this link to learn the complete process.
Follow simple steps to recover digital images from memory card after format error:
Step 1: Download and install the free trial version of Digital Photo Recovery Software. Launch the application by selecting it from the Program Menu or by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop. As the main screen appears click on "Recover Photos" option as shown in Figure 1

Step 4: After selecting the drive you find a window in which you need to select the file type. If you do not want to select file type then you can skip the step. The software starts scanning process. After the scanning process is complete the recovered pictures are displayed. You can view them by using the "Data View" or "File Type View" option as shown in Figure 4
